Sitting just across the Congaree River from Columbia, West Columbia was originally founded as Brookland in 1894 before being renamed New Brookland, and then West Columbia in 1936. It began as a community that provided housing for workers at nearby mills and continues to thrive as a “bedroom community” of approximately 15,000 residents.
