Sumter was named for Revolutionary War Gen. Thomas Sumter. Its military heritage continues today with Shaw Air Force Base, where some of the most skilled fighter pilots in the world train to defend America. Sumter hosts approximately 15,000 visitors per week during tourism season and Swan Lake Iris Gardens, the only public gardens with all eight known species of swans, is a signature attraction.
